In automotive terms, taking the high road usually means sacrificing luxury and performance, but now you can put the pedal to the metal while being ecological.
Luxury automakers at the Geneva auto exhibition unleashed their takes on eco-friendliness, showing off hybrid vehicles that still promise to roar on the street. Two supercar marques vying for the hybrid prize are Ferrari and Porsche.
Ferrari maybe popular for its flaming red eye stealers, but the high-end auto brand took a turn to the green, literally. Sporting an apple green coat is the 599 HY-KERS “vettura laboratorio” or experimental vehicle.
The Ferrari 599 claims to cut average carbon dioxide emissions on the ECE + EUDC combined cycle by 35 percent while going from 0 to 96.5 km/hr in under 3.5 seconds. It can also accelerate to a little over 320 km/hr. So how long to go from concept to production? If you want an F1 flair to your hybrid, you’d have to wait five years for this 25 mpg ride.
Ferrari 599 may have an F1 charm but the hybrid winner has to be the Porsche 918 Spyder. The prototype 918 appears to have the superior combo of high-tech racing features with eco-friendly electric technology.
Just like a true sports car, the Porsche 918 can accelerate from a full stop to 100 km/hr in under 3.2 seconds and has a top speed of 320 km/hr.
While it leaves other cars in the dust, the 78 mpg-Porsche 918 also impresses by running up to 25 km or 6 miles on electricity alone, thanks to its ultra light weight of 1,490 kg or 3,285 lbs.
Though Porsche might have pulled a slim victory over Ferrari with this one, both luxury automakers deserve kudos for proving it’s cool to be green.
