Lagerfeld keeps your treasures safe

Larger-than-life German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld is a very busy man. Creative director and chief designer of fashion giant Chanel, Lagerfeld also maintains his own fashion label and helms the house of Fendi.  He designs costumes and is an accomplished photographer, and you’d think he’d be content with his achievements. Think again.

A firm believer in bespoke luxuries and a fastidious perfectionist, Lagerfeld has turned his attention to luxury safe design. In collaboration with German safe maker Markus Döttling, he has designed the Narcissus safe, a high-security personal vault that redefines the meaning of luxury, an effort that has taken almost two years to complete.

Standing at just under six feet, the Narcissus cuts an impressive figure, much like the monolith from the Kubrick film 2001: A Space Odyssey. The sturdy steel body is wrapped in high-gloss chrome-plated aluminum, giving both impregnability (within reasonable standards) and modernist class.

At its sides, two doors open up to reveal interior drawers for your family jewelry, luxury watches, diamond-encrusted Leica and that Barbara Cartland book you don’t want anyone to know you’re reading.  It’s the ultimate in designer objects, an oxymoron almost. Normally you’d want to hide a safe from prying eyes; this one begs to be displayed.

Only thirty pieces of the Narcissus will ever be made, and Lagerfeld already has number one. Just 29 are left, and, even at $339,000, you can be sure that this safe will fly out of the Döttling workshop’s doors fast.
