Sofa boat for $16,000: win or fail?

Tired of throwing yacht parties? Try yacht-hopping on a sofa boat.

Leisure sailors in Abu Dhabi have found a new way  to socialize on water, off the deck. Like a floating throne, the Abra Marine Sofa Boat is packed with innovative technologies that can make Poseidon jealous. For one, it can be steered using a simple joystick, allowing anyone, even a kid, to navigate around the marina with ease.

During midday, a huge canopy can be folded up for the relaxation of guests basking in the breeze. The vehicle is lined with soft rubberized foams for safety, inviting boys of all ages to play bumper boats.

Green advocates would approve of this recreational vessel as it is totally powered by electricity and promises not to emit the smallest trace of carbon dioxide. You can recharge the batteries through an electronic socket—nothing different from what you do to your netbook or mobile phone. A fully charged boat can run continuously for 12 hours.

Pimping up the vehicle is easy because the creators already prepared a number of luxury treats under their sleeves. The upgrade menu consists of customized leather seating, a cocktail table, a built-in audio system, a two-seat set-up, and a  socket for  a laptop or other electronic devices.

The sofa is moderately priced at 59,000 UAE dirhams or roughly $16,000. It is available through Belevari Marine, which also plans to charter the boats around the  UAE.

Early adopters have found it to be a love-it-or-hate-it toy. Either people think it’s cool and innovative and all, or they dismiss it as a silly contraption and a waste of money.

Win or fail? If you already have a sofa boat, you must be a winner because you have sixteen large to spare and don’t care what people think.
