Until it was “rediscovered” by a pair of Viennese students back in 1991 and deftly marketed as a must-have hipster accessory, the LOMO LC-A camera was a small, inexpensive camera meant to make photography accessible to the Russian masses. Metal-clad and sturdy, the LC-A made use of 35mm instant film, capturing vivid colorful scenes through its Minitar 1 wide angle lens. Over the years, it’s been a favorite of creative folks seeking a return to the good ol’ feeling of analog photography that was spontaneous, quirky, and unpredictable.
Under the auspices of the Lomography Society International, as well as word-of-mouth and media hype, demand for LOMOs skyrocketed. When the LOMO Optical factory in St. Petersburg announced the end to LC-A assembly in 2005, production was shifted to China and the LC-A+ was born. There have been several limited editions to the LC-A+, including the LOMO LC-A+ 25th Anniversary Edition and the LOMO LC-A+ “No Nukes” Edition, but there has never been one quite like this: the LOMO LC-A+ Gold.
Gilded in 24-carat gold leaf and exquisite leather trim, the LOMO LC-A+ Gold has set LOMO fans abuzz with gear lust. And why not? Production is limited to only 130 pieces, making this LC-A+ one of the rarest models in the world. Each piece is engraved with a serial number and comes with a certificate of authenticity, guaranteeing you are getting an original. What’s more, this edition comes with the original Russian-made Minitar 1 lens, rather than a China-made one. As befits it, the LOMO LC-A+ Gold comes handsomely packaged in an elegant wooden box, with two rolls of premium film and the hardcover book Lomographiere.
Since the edition is limited to only 130 units, we imagine the LOMO LC-A+ will be going fast. If you manage to purchase one from the Lomography online store, then, good for you! If you miss the opportunity, then you’ll have to find someone on the secondary market willing to part ways with this keeper of a camera. Either way, good luck!
