Designer bookshelf projects power

You can tell a lot about a person’s character by the books he or she reads. Books reflect an owner’s interests and ideals, passions and pastimes. They can provide clues about their owner, but they can also be strong deliberate statements, a wearing of allegiances on one’s sleeve.

Such is JUXTAPOSITION: Power, the second edition in a series of collectible curated bookshelves  created by California-based design duo Mike & Maaike for design collective blankblank. These shelves collect seven of the world’s most classic texts on the subject of power and its relationship to the ordering of society, covering the political ideals of liberalism, communism, elitism, absolutism, democracy, theocracy and anarchy, and present them on a precision-milled hardwood shelf. Each book slots into its own niche, which gives all seven volumes equal standing when brought together.

As with the first in the series, JUXTAPOSITION: Religion, the designers Mike & Maaike intend that JUXTAPOSITION: Power, and each future edition, equally represent the diversity of the chosen subject matter. This set is curated by Athmeya Jaram, a doctoral candidate in Political Theory at the University of California in Berkley who specializes in analytical approaches to ethics and political philosophy.  He includes: Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes, The Federalist Papers by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay, The Republic by Plato, On Liberty by John Stuart Mill, The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx, The Conquest of Bread by Peter Kropotkin, and Social Justice in Islam by Sayyid Qutb.

Limited to a run of only fifty pieces, JUXTAPOSITION: Power proves to be an impressive and essential addition to one’s library or study. Available through the blankblank website.
